From today’s class. Ugh, photographing wet oil paintings sucks.
Oil paintings I didn’t get around to photographing before I went out of town. A portrait from Anatomy of our model using the whole wiping away method, my finished black and white still-life for Pictorial, and the very beginnings of my color still-life. I hate hate hate working with oils. Thankfully, this is the only Pictorial project we absolutely have to do in oils, but I’m not sure if the rest of the semester is oils in Anatomy…oh gosh, I really hope not…or at least I hope we’re not using that method and I can be free to be more painterly.
Oh, the black and white still-life is 8” x 8”, in case anyone is curious. I didn’t really have a small enough brush for that one… >_>;;; The other two are larger.
A study I did of a classmate’s profile to help me with my current assignment where I’m painting him. The painting won’t be realism like this, but I need reference and I desperately need to do more studies of the human face and how light passes over it.
Each of these is 6” x 6” (a little over 15cm?). One of the far right is definitely the best. The lighting and expression made it a lot easier than the other two. Adam told me from the beginning when he saw my photos that it would be the easiest. He knows his stuff.
I still need to refine the brushwork, but here is my first painting of my facial expression series for Pictoral Foundation class. It’s my second time working in gouache and it’s going a good bit better than the first. The painting is 6” by 6” (that’s about 15.3 cm).
One of those pieces where you come back a day later and wince because you can see all the things you did wrong. But it was my first time working with gouache, it was done in under 3 hours, and I was having lots of anxiety so I think I’ll not beat myself up over it. I’m not sure how I feel about gouache. I probably won’t really form an opinion until after my next time using it.
One of Nicholo’s friends kindly came in today to model for us. I joined in part way through, so I didn’t get to finish, but here’s what I drew…
